Rehab to Ease Back Pain

If your back hurts, physical therapy can be your ticket to relief. It eases pain and helps you move better.

Whatever your needs, your physical therapist can come up with a treatment plan to suit you. But the first thing they'll try to do is ease your back pain and boost your flexibility. Exercise can strengthen and stretch muscles that support the spine. Physical therapy also helps reduce pain, improve movement, and help prevent future back problems. It is difficult to predict how many visits of physical therapy will be necessary but initial prescriptions are often one-to-two visits per week for four-to-six weeks.

Back pain

Back pain is a very common complaint that almost all of us might have experienced atleast once in our lifetime. Identifying the exact cause of backpain is the formost step in effectively managing the pain. Back pain can either be due to a nerve compression due to prolapsed disc, or can be due to over strain of the muscles. Some other underlying pathologies can also show backpain as a symptom. Proper investigations like blood tests, x ray, MRI along with proper examination of patient can reveal the cause. Depending upon the cause and extend of underlying pathology, management protocol can be planned.

Back pain is considered chronic if it lasts three months or longer. It can come and go, often bringing temporary relief, followed by frustration. Dealing with chronic back pain can be especially trying if you don’t know the cause.

Common Causes of Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain is usually age-related, but can also result from a prior injury. The most common causes include:

  • Arthritis of the spine —the gradual thinning of the cartilage inside the spine
  • Spinal stenosis —narrowing of the spinal canal that may lead to nerve pain
  • Disc problems, such as a herniated or bulging disc
  • Myofascial pain syndrome—unexplained muscle pain and tenderness

Rehabilitation services may be provided at the following types of facilities:

Physical Therapy

Exercise is the foundation of chronic back pain treatment. It’s one of the first treatments you should try under the guidance of your physician and spine physical therapist. However, the same set of exercises doesn’t work for everyone, says Nava. The exercises have to be tailored to your specific symptoms and condition. Maintaining the exercise routine at home is also a big part of success.

Physical therapy for chronic back pain may include:

  • Retraining your posture
  • Testing the limits of pain tolerance
  • Stretching and flexibility exercises
  • Aerobic exercises
  • Core strengthening
